Day 1 – 20 Dec Picton to Furneaux Lodge
After a relaxing crossing from Wellington on the morning Interislander ferry “Kaitaki” we arrived in Picton at 12.30 and while the girls did the food shopping we collected Halo from the mooring, topped up with diesel and water in Picton marina. After crew instructions and safety briefing we departed Picton at 1446 hrs and called Marlborough Radio advising Trip Report for ETA Furneaux Lodge of 1830 hrs. Weather conditions were ideal especially for the first time sailors with blue skies, winds 5-10 kts but unfortunately coming from north west. After tacking our way up Queen Charlotte Sound we decided to start the engine and motor up the Sound until we turned left into Endeavour Inlet where we got some good breezes and sailed the rest of the way. Arrived Furneaux Lodge at 1842 hts. Trip distance 18.5 nautical miles. Time enroute 5.55 hrs.
Tried calling Furneaux Lodge on VHF on arrival but they weren’t answering so we tied up at the jetty, unloaded the gear and all (except Geoff and Graciela who slept on the boat) checked into the two bedroomed unit at the lodge. Lodge reception advised that as it was not too busy we could keep Halo on the jetty overnight rather than moving out to one of their moorings which made life easy.
Day 2 – 21 Dec Furneaux Lodge to Ship Cove
Left Furneaux Lodge at 1128 hrs and sailed out of Endeavour Inlet and up to Ship Cove where we tied Halo up at the jetty at 1342 hrs. Had a relaxing afternoon with picnic lunch at the nice picnic tables, explored the Captain Cook information boards and hiked up the Queen Charlotte Walkway to the lookout. Left Ship Cove at 1755 hrs and sailed back to Furneaux Lodge arriving 1930 hrs.
Day 3 – 22 Dec
No sailing today. Relaxing day at lodge and walk up to the waterfall.
Day 4 – 23 Dec Furneaux Lodge to Bay of Many Coves and Picton
Departed Furneaux at 1012 hrs and enjoyed good sailing with a tail wind down Queen Charlotte Sound. Almost missed the turnoff after passing Snake Point! Arrived at Bay of Many Coves 1224 hrs where we tied up at the jetty for a nice lunch in the resort cafe. Departed BOMC at 1523 hrs and sailed back to Picton arriving at 1641 hrs. Secured Halo back onto the rented mooring (deflated dinghy and stored in cabin). The young ones checked into the Harbour View Motel which was had a well equipped kitchen and we cooked a great dinner in-house.
Day 4 – 24 Dec Picton to Wellington
Took the 1030 hrs Sounds Air flight back to Wellington in time for Christmas Eve at Louise and Nick’s.
