Crew: Geoff, Murray, Eduardo, Julie, Tunch
Marine Forecast: Northerly 15 knots, but 20 knots gusting 30 knots at times about the south coast. Sea moderate at times about the south coast. Fine with high cloud.
Early start leaving Chaffers at 0730 hrs and with Murray on helm and in breezy northerly (20+ kts) we motor-sailed across harbour arriving at Seaview at 0850 hrs. After attending the skippers briefing and getting some good coffees we were back on the water. Wind seemed a bit calmer north of Somes so we hoisted the Main and No 1 LT Genoa and did a few practise tacks ready for the first warning at 1025hrs. We crossed the start line on starboard tack behind the bunch keeping clear of the more aggressive boats edging each other to cross first.
After rounding the top mark at Petone Beach we hoisted the medium spinnaker. At first we had a classic hour glass twist and we had to re-hoist it to clear. May have been caused by us being too slow on the hoist. It still didn’t look 100% once it was hoisted. On the next time round we positioned the spinnaker pole higher on the mast but after looking at the photos now it seems like we needed to bring in the guy line and the sheet much tighter (at the same time) so that clew of the kite meets the spinnaker pole. Wind was pretty strong (over 20 kts) which made this difficult though.
Also I’d like to go out and practise one day with our spinnaker snuffer which I’ve never used. Apparently this makes the hole job a lot simpler and fail safe.
We were last across the finish line and then had a great sail back to Chaffers with Eduardo on helm. Wind was gusting to 35 kts so we dropped the Genoa and put one reef in the main which went well. Arrived back at the berth at 1310 hrs.
