Spinnaker Practice – 14 May 2017

Crew: Geoff and Peter

Marine forecast: Northerly 10 knots, changing southerly 10 knots this evening. Sea slight. Cloudy periods.

Left Chaffers at 1030 hrs with Mainsail and No. 3 Genoa and tacked up towards Ngauranga Gorge.

Geoff inadvertently dropped the binoculars case over the side so we took advantage to practice our MOB procedure! Peter quickly dropped the headsail and Geoff turned on the engine and we did an about turn and Peter successfully retrieved the case with the boat hook on the first pass. All good.

Once we got near Interislander Ferry Terminal we dropped the Genoa, did a 360 degree turn, and sailed downwind. Hoisted the spinnaker with Peter on spinnaker sheets, the autohelm on tiller and Geoff on bow. The hoist went smoothly and we were soon doing up to 6.5 knots down towards Evans Bay.

Opposite Shelly Bay we decided to tempt fate and try a spinnaker gybe. Went well – yay!

After we passed the “finish line” opposite Evans bay clubhouse we tacked back home arriving at Chaffers at about 1400 hrs.

An excellent and successful exercise in spinnaker use in preparation for the upcoming winter sailing season.
