Wgtn Harbour Night Sailing Practice – 23 Feb 2018

Crew: Geoff, Robert, Grant, Eduardo, Murray

Forecast: 10-5 kts variable winds dying out. Clear skies.

In preparation for the 24-Hour Endurance Race next week we took Halo out for a practice night sail in Wellington Harbour. We planned to depart at 2000 hrs which gave us time to watch the arrival of the fleet of Waka in Wellington Harbour before we set sail.

Departed Chaffers at 2030, hoisted Mainsail and No.1 Genoa and headed out towards east passing Point Jerningham (Q.R) and then Pt Halswell (Fl 3s). We then headed north across the shipping lane past the west side of Somes Island (LFI) towards the Petone Wharf (2FR vert) and then east towards Seaview Marina (Fl 5s) and Seaview Wharf (2 FG vert).

By now the wind had almost died so we had to start the engine. We then headed south towards Ward Island (no lights) and spotted the Falcon Shoals and Steeple Rock lights further south. Rounded The Rear Lead – Hope Shoal (Iso WGR 4s) and headed back home past Pt Halswell and Pt Jerningham arriving at Chaffers Marina at 2300.
An excellent night sailing practice in anticipation of our 24Hr Endurance Race next week!
