Crew: Geoff, Eduardo, Murray, Juscinta, Albrecht, Lorna.
Forecast: Northerly 20 knots, changing southerly 30 knots gusting 40 knots late afternoon or early evening. Southerly easing to 25 knots gusting 35 knots late evening. Sea becoming rough early evening. Mainly fine, poor visibility in heavy showers from late afternoon.
We cast off from Chaffers Marina at 1040 hrs. With the new Covid regulations we weren’t allowed to dock at Evans Bay to collect crew. The race sign on/off was done via a clever online form rather than the paper sign-on sheet normally used.
Wind was around 18 kts northerly so we rigged up the No. 3 Jib with full Main. We sailed round Pt. Jerningham arriving opposite the Evans Bay club house at 1120 hrs and did some practice tacks while waiting for the race.
Positions were Murray on helm, Eduardo on bow, Lorna on mainsheet, Juscinta and Albrecht on sail trim, Geoff skipper and general dogsbody.
To position ourselves for the race start we sailed parallel to the start line between Shoal Pile and the clubhouse 2 or 3 times. Good to see the start box lights working well for the 5 minute count down to the race start at 1200 hrs.
We had a good start but we were on a port tack which, while good for the wind direction, meant it was a bit tricky at the beginning dodging many of the other boats who had started on a starboard tack. In spite of this we had a good start and were still ahead of many of the boats by half way up Evans Bay. We had a couple of close calls with other boats which interfered with our tacking timings and caused us to lose some ground. We rounded Pt. Halswell at 1230 hrs and sailed on a beam reach getting up to 7 kts at times.
We rounded the Falcon Shoal light at 1246 hrs and beat our way back to Pt. Halswell. Wind was a blustery 23 kts with heavy seas which knocked us back a bit. We were glad to have the No. 3 Jib rigged and the boat was well balanced for the wind.
Back in Evans Bay for the down-wind section of the race, we decided against using the spinnaker and rigged up the pole to sail goose-winged with the jib at 6.5 to 7 kts down the bay. We crossed the finish line at 1331 hrs just ahead of Tamerlane.
We then sailed back to Chaffers with Juscinta doing a great job on helm and Geoff trying out the new gas cooker and gimbal for the first time while under sail (a great success). We docked Halo back in the marina at 1422 hrs and joined the Temptation crew for after race drinks together with the Tamerlane crew.
Due to a technical hitch the results weren’t published until Sunday afternoon. Tamerlane won the race on handicap and Halo came 9th. A wet and wild race for all boats out on the water and a thoroughly enjoyable day’s sailing!
