Crew: Geoff, Jason, Eduardo, Abrecht, Lorna.
Metservice Forecast: Northerly 10 knots, rising to 15 knots this morning, and to 25 knots gusting 35 knots early this evening. Winds 5 knots lighter in the harbour from morning. Sea becoming rough out of the harbour early evening. Becoming cloudy.
We cast off from Chaffers at 1007 hrs. Hoisted the Mainsail and with only about 10 kts of northerly in the harbour hoisted the No. HW Genoa and sailed across towards Pt. Halswell. We then hoisted the medium Spinnaker for some pre-race practice down the bay with Eduardo on helm, Geoff and Jason on bow and Lorna on keys. Wind was slowly increasing by now up to around 18 kts.
We tied up at the Evans Bay wharf just behind Corianda and Albrecht joined us. The Cruising Division race course was announced as No. 8 – round Somes Island and back – starting at 1200 hrs.
After a quick lunch we rigged up the No. 2 Jib and cast off from the wharf at 1145 hrs and positioned ourselves for the 5 minute countdown.
Our start went pretty well on starboard tack just behind Usurper.
We cleared Evans Bay after 5 tacks beating into the wind and then continued close hauled at around 6 kts up to the east side of Somes Island.
Once we round the top of the island at 1320 hrs Eduardo took over the helm for the downwind run and we hoisted the medium spinnaker. We flew the kite all the way down to Evans Bay. We finished at 1402 hrs, beating Coriander, Tamerlane, Wakarere, and Footprints over the finish line.
At the prize-giving back at the clubhouse it was announced that Halo came 10th on corrected time. Not our best result but a great day’s sailing out on the water.
