EBYMBC Opening Day – 10 Oct 2020

Crew: Geoff, Murray, Albrecht, Martin, Petra.

Forecast: Northeast 10 knots, easing to variable 5 knots for a time in the afternoon and evening. Sea slight. Mostly fine, high cloud increasing.

Departed Chaffers at 1000 hrs with Martin and Petra (plus Andrew and Cristina who came for the ride) and did some practise sailing with No. 2 Jib and Mainsail. We Goosewinged the jib as we came down Evans Bay with wind averaging 15 kts from the north. Arrived at Evans Bay at 1123 hrs and tied up at the wharf alongside Saucy Sausage.

As it was the EBYMBC Opening Day we dressed Halo with the bunting then enjoyed the festivities at the club. After the formal opening Murray and Albrecht joined us as we rigged up up the Spinnaker sheets etc. We signed on for the Interclub Spinnaker Race which was announced as Course #2. (Start – Ngauranga Mark – Falcon Shoal Light – Finish). Race to start at 1400 hrs.

With a large number of boats competing our tactic was to start on a starboard tack at the Falcon Shoal end of the line. The only problem was that from that distance we found it very hard to see the start box lights which caused us some confusion on the countdown sequence. When we saw boats starting to cross the line it was obvious the race had started and so off we went – over a minute behind the main bunch.

We tacked our way northwards making good progress with sails nicely trimmed and Murray doing a great job on helm. As we headed out into the harbour we noticed that all the boats which were behind us were now turning right towards Ward Island. We realised they were doing the EBYMBC course. This now left us at the back of the pack of faster Interclub Race boats.

We reached the top mark after just seven tacks and then hoisted the medium Spinnaker and cruised down the harbour towards Falcon Shoal. The wind was dropping to around 10 kts so we changed the headsail to the No. 1 LT Genoa. Before we rounded the mark we hoisted the genoa, dropped the spinnaker, and then did two tacks to reach Point Halswell. We then hoisted the Spinnaker again for the run down Evans Bay to cross the finish line at 1632 hrs.

After dropping Murray and Albrecht off at Evans Bay we motored back to Chaffers tying up at the berth at 1710 hrs.
