EBYMBC Holmes Cup – 17 Oct 2020

Crew: Geoff, Bruce, Nikolas, Lorna, Martin and Petra.

Today: Southerly 15 knots, easing to 10 knots this afternoon and to variable 5 knots this evening. Sea slight. Fair visibility in occasional showers, clearing this afternoon.

Departed Chaffers Marina at 1105 hrs with Geoff, Bruce and Nikolas on board. With wind averaging 14 kts southerly we decided to hoist the No. 1 HW Genoa. By the time we were round to Evans Bay and sailing close-hauled into 18 kts and doing around 5.5 kts SOG we agreed we were over powered. We tied up at Evans Bay wharf at 1200 hrs where Martin, Petra and Lorna joined us. The course was announced as #26, Start- Somes Island – Ward Island – Finish. The wind didn’t appear to be dropping so we rigged up the No. 2 Genoa and Medium Spinnaker in preparation for the downwind start and cast off at at 1242 hrs with Bruce on main, Geoff on helm, Lorna on keys, Martin, Nik and Petra on bow and sail trim.

The start box lights were easily visible this time and we had a pretty good start hoisting the spinnaker as we went over the line. The long run to Somes Island went well as we sailed at about 7 kts pulling ahead of most of the fleet although Geoff had to work pretty hard on helm as we surfed the waves coming from behind us. When we neared the top mark and went to drop the kite we got into some difficulty. The spinnaker clew got caught in the pole lifting it high in the air and unable to be released. By then Temptation was sailing close to us on our leeward side meaning we couldn’t bear away to release the tension on the kite. By the time we had sorted it out the rest of the fleet had passed inside us and were tacking their way up to Ward Island. We fought gallantly to make up ground and caught up with Tamerlane at one stage (one close call needed a quick tack to avoid collision). After rounding Ward Island we made good progress on a beam reach until rounding Point Halswell and tacking our way up to Evans Bay as the sun finally came out and we crossed the finish line at 1541 hrs.

After dropping Martin, Petra and Lorna off at Evans Bay we then motored back to Chaffers, docking on the berth at 1621 hrs.

The results were published that evening. Temptation achieved first place and Halo came in last out of seven boats, four minutes behind Tamerlane.
