EBYMBC Commodore’s Cup – 7 Nov 2020

Crew: Geoff, Grant, Peter, Lorna, Albrecht, Alison.

Forecast: Northerly 10 knots, rising to 20 knots this morning, easing to 10 knots this evening. Sea becoming moderate for a time during the day.

Peter and Grant joined Geoff on Halo and we departed Chaffers at 1037 hrs. With the northerly blowing at 15-18 kts we hoisted the No. 3 Jib. After passing Pt. Jerningham we poled out the Jib to sail goose-winged down Evans Bay and then tied up at the wharf at 1134 hrs.

The race course was announced as #22: Start, Mark 18 Days Bay – Finish. It wold be a staggered start with Halo starting 15 minutes after the first boat.

Lorna, Albrecht and Alison joined us at Evans Bay and we rigged up the spinnaker lines. We heard that the start would be delayed as we had to wait for a ship at Burnham Wharf to depart first. We cast off at 1254 hrs and did some practice tacks with Grant on helm, Albrecht and Alison on trimming, Peter on mainsheet, Lorna on lookout and keys, and Albrecht on bow.

Our number 15 dropped and we went over the start line at 1337 hrs. We were able to clear Pt Halswell in two tacks and then ease to a beam reach across the harbour to Days Bay, or more accurately Sunshine Bay where the buoy was located. With Peter taking over on helm we enjoyed a close tussle with Grenadier which continued throughout the race. On returning to Evans Bay we had a quick and clean hoist of our medium spinnaker and had a fast run downwind, drawing ahead of Grenadier to cross the finish line at 1527 hrs

After dropping off crew at Evans Bay we then motored back to Chaffers Marina tying up at the berth at 1614 hrs.

As of writing we haven’t seen any published results but we had a great race with Halo and crew performing well.
