Mākaro/Ward Island – 21 Dec 2020

Crew: Geoff, Graciela, Jenny, Isabelle and Max.

Today: Southerly 15 knots, easing to 10 knots this afternoon. Becoming northerly 10 knots this evening. Sea slight. Cloudy periods.

First time this season taking out Isabelle and Max on Halo. We departed Chaffers Dock at 1245 hrs and hoisted the Mainsail and No. 2 Jib. With Graciela on helm we sailed across the harbour towards Ward Island. The southerly breeze was a a bit light at times so we turned on the engine in the lulls. We taught both Isabelle and Max how to start the engine. Very exciting!

We got a bit more breeze after we passed Pt Halswell and sailed on to Ward Island. We tied up on the club mooring at 1356 hrs. After lunch we pumped up the dinghy and rowed over to the island for exploring. The weather was pretty cool so didn’t get to do any swimming but the kids had fun collecting shells and rocks on the beach, exploring the cave, and paddling in the water. Lots of grey seagull chicks around and the adult gulls were pretty noisy as they protected their young. Saw a few oyster catchers too. We rowed back to Halo and tied the dinghy behind the boat and cast off from the mooring at 1605 hrs.

The wind picked up to a pleasant 10 kts and we sailed all the way back with Jenny doing a great job on helm and the kids helping out at times. Arrived back at the marina at 1705 hrs. A great day out on the water for all!
