Winter Series Race Two – 3 July 2021

Crew: Geoff, Albrecht, Grant, Jim, Nina.

Forecast: Northerly 10 knots, rising to 15 knots for a time in the morning. Sea slight. Fine. HW 1200 hrs.

A bloody great day to go sailing! With Geoff, Grant and Jim on board we cast off from Chaffers Marina at 0900 hrs. The northerly was forecast to pick up to 15 kts so we rigged the No. 1 HW Genoa and motor sailed round to Evans Bay and collected Albrecht and Nina at the wharf. Our start time was set as 1010 hrs on the pursuit race with the course of Start – Falcon Shoal – Ward Is – Somes Is – Finish. The reverse of the previous race. Positions were allocated as Grant on helm, Albrecht on bow, Nina and Jim on trim.

We were a bit slow getting into a good position for the start and crossed the line on a port tack about 1 min late. The true wind was around 9 kts. In hindsight we would have gone better with the light No. 1 as the wind kept dropping as we sailed up Evans Bay. We rounded Pt Halswell and found the other boats ahead of us were all becalmed in Kau Bay. Pretty soon Halo ground to a halt as the wind died out at 1055 hrs. We drifted around for about half an hour until the breeze slowly picked up and we hoisted the maxi Spinnaker for the run to Falcon Shoal. At this stage Race Control advised over the VHF that the course would be shortened removing the Somes rounding which we were happy with.

We rounded Falcon Shoal at 1152 and dropped the spinnaker and hoisted the Genoa for the beat up to Ward Is. We lost some ground on the other boats on this leg as we went further south than the others and lost wind. After rounding Ward Island at 1220 hrs in three tacks we then sailed on a beam reach back across the harbour at around 6 kts in around 8 kts of wind. As we entered Evans Bay we hoisted the spinnaker again for the downwind run to cross the finish line at 1305 hrs.

A great day out on the water. A bit more wind would have been nice though!
