Another stunning winter’s day in Wellington for Race 3 for the Barton Marine Winter Series.
Start time for all boats was 1045 hrs. Start – Mark 15 off Pt Halswell – Mark 8 off Greta Point – Finish. We hoisted our No.1 LT Genoa and rigged up ready to use the Maxi Spinnaker. The wind was very light but all 15 boats in the Cruising Division managed to complete the (shortened) course.
At the start most of the fleet converged at the clubhouse end of the line to catch the 3-4 kts of northerly curving around Greta Point. Things got a bit cramped with boats almost touching during the pre-start. Halo managed to avoid any collisions although we were about a minute late getting over the start line behind almost all boats.
We enjoyed some match racing with Incantare (Glen McCauley’s Young 88) during the upwind leg. They crossed the start line ahead of us on the same port tack but we edged ahead as we got good lift on the starboard tack staying close to the shore heading up towards Greta Point. We narrowly avoided one of the moored yachts as we tacked back into the centre and then we were neck and neck with Incantare as we met in the centre of the Bay and played cat and mouse and avoiding dead wind spots while tacking up to the top mark. We rounded Mark 15 at 1157 hrs, ahead of Incantare, Tamerlane, Haumuri and Footprints.
On the downwind run we hoisted the kite and with the breeze down to 2 kts we sailed slowly down the bay to cross the finish line at 1255 hrs with 6 boats behind us and scoring 6th place on handicap out of 15 boats. A beautiful day out on the water!
