Quickslip and Harbour Sail – 18 Nov 2021

Crew: Geoff, Graciela, Malcolm.

Forecast: Variable 5 knots. Changing southerly 10 knots this morning, then becoming northerly 10 knots in the afternoon. Sea slight. Fine.

In preparation for Saturday’s Island Bay race we took advantage of a nice day to do a bottom clean at the Evans Bay slipway. We cast off from Chaffers at 0950 hrs and with the light southerly breeze we motor sailed round Pt Jerningham and arrived at the slipway at 1035 hrs. We gave the hull a good wash down with the broom making it look new again. The boat is due for a new coat of anti-foul paint and we made a tentative booking to get Halo on the hard in a few weeks time.

We were just ready to re-float Halo when Malcolm turned up to say hello. Great timing 🙂 We invited him to join us for a short sail. We cast off from the travel lift at 1132 hrs. The breeze was still coming from the south so we hoisted the No. 2 Jib poled out which went well but as we neared Pt Halswell the wind suddenly turned westerly then to the north rising to 10-14 kts (as forecast by Metservice). We dropped the sails and motored into Kau Bay to tie up at the club mooring. I tried out the ‘My Anchor Watch’ app for the first time. It seemed to work fine but after about 20 mins sounded the alarm even though we hadn’t moved. Mmm. Needs further investigation.

After lunch and a cup of tea we cast off from the mooring and sailed back to Chaffers on a beam reach with Malcolm doing a great job on helm. Tied up at the berth at 1345 hrs. Total distance travelled: 8.9 nautical miles.
