Mākaro/Ward Island – 4 Jan 2022

Crew: Geoff, Graciela, Louise, Nick, Lucas and Chelsea.

Forecast: Variable 5 knots. Southerly 10 knots developing late morning. Sea slight. Fine with high cloud.

We cast off from our berth at 1150 hrs and hoisted the mainsail and No. 2 jib. The southerly breeze was about 12 kts by the time we passed Pt Jerningham and with Nick doing a great job on helm we sailed on a good beam reach across the harbour towards Ward Island.

On arrival at Ward Island we found that the club mooring was occupied by another boat, Sula. We requested permission to raft up with them and the skipper, Mike was happy for us to come alongside. We rigged up our fenders and mooring lines tied up next to them.

After our nice lunch put on by Louise, Sula was ready to sail back to Wellington, so we transferred the mooring over to Halo. We were then ready for our expedition to the island. We put on our togs, launched the dinghy, and rowed over to the island. The kids had a great time playing on the beach. We all enjoyed cooling off with swims in the warmish water and exploring the island.

We eventually returned to Halo with Nick, Graciela and Geoff swimming over from the island. After cups of tea and coffee we cast off from the mooring at 1636 hrs and sailed back to Wellington. Got good speeds of over 6 kts until we reached the calm of Oriental Bay. Lucas and Chelsea both had turns helming the boat. We tied up back in our Chaffers berth at 1730 hrs.
